Look Up
People are different than pigs. Yes, sometimes we share more similarities than we care to admit, but we are different on many levels. For instance… pigs don’t really look up! At least, they are very limited; they are more naturally inclined to look down with their snouts near, or in, the earth. They don’t typically have any use for looking up, as everything they need or care about is at ground level. God made them that way, perhaps as a living metaphor. They are doomed to look down.
You and I are different – we are upright creatures. More than that we are made in God's image with a greater capacity for contemplation and appreciation for the universe than mere swine.
It is interesting how looking up literally causes one to look up figuratively. David found that to be the case:
Psalm 8:3-4
3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
4 What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You visit him?
By looking up, David observed the universe as being the magnificent work of God, and he himself as being insignificant in comparison. But at the same time he was in awe that the same creator has a purpose for us despite our seeming insignificance.
That being said, we should not just stop at being admirers of what we see or even of the One who created it. We should contemplate His character, that He is both mighty and good and is worthy… of our devotion.
So don't be a pig - take the time to look up.
