Two of Every Kind

The Ground of a Rich Man

Scott Gravitt Season 1 Episode 4

Luke 12 provided the content for the previous episode, “He Didn’t Get Jesus”...

This episode takes its subject matter from that same discourse.

Mark 4:26-29
26 Jesus also said, “The Kingdom of God is like a farmer who scatters seed on the ground. 27 Night and day, while he’s asleep or awake, the seed sprouts and grows, but he does not understand how it happens. 28 The earth produces the crops on its own. First a leaf blade pushes through, then the heads of wheat are formed, and finally the grain ripens. 29 And as soon as the grain is ready, the farmer comes and harvests it with a sickle, for the harvest time has come.”

 Luke 12:16
Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully…”

 James 1:17
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

Welcome back to Two of Every Kind…

There’s a well-known teaching of Jesus that has been labeled “the rich fool”.  In short, a rich landowner found comfort in his wealth and abundance, but his materialistic focus did not prepare his soul to meet God.  A great lesson, and I recommend a full reading of the text, but let’s just focus on the first line, Luke 12:16, which says,

Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully..."

It’s remarkable that Jesus basically gives this man no credit at all.  He didn’t say, “a man worked his land by the sweat of his brow, and it paid off”, or “a certain rich man was quite industrious running his farming business”.  Rather, Jesus gives glory to the ground for providing for this man’s prosperity.

It’s very possible that this man gave extraordinary effort; even still he could accomplish NOTHING had it not been for God causing the soil to produce.

This man looked down to the earth to see his crops, but he needed to look up heaven to offer God thanks.

And so it is with us:  We may not label ourselves as rich, but we HAVE yielded something.  Whatever blessings we make use of from day to day, our hands and hard work may be in it, but you can be CERTAIN that God has given the increase.

We read in James 1:17 that every good and perfect gift is from the father above.

So let’s:

Thank and praise God

Be humble

Share with others

Honor God through faithful obedience

And remember:  the physical blessings are sweet, but the spiritual blessings (In Christ) are eternal.

God’s grace towards us has been immeasurable… let’s just make sure we’re giving Him the credit.
